Waynesville drops to second place in ‘Best Main Street’ contest

Waynesville’s Main Street has dropped into second place in the “Best Shopping on Main Street” contest, but could still win the top prize.

The contest rules have been modified so that three winners will be selected. Waynesville falls into the “Quaint” category, towns with a population of under 10,000. Town in the “Charming” category have populations between 10,001 and 50,000 while “Bustling” cities have between 50,001 to 100,000.

In the voting, Waynesville is second with slightly more than 2,000 votes while Holland, Michigan, has about 2,300 votes.

The Michigan community that’s in the lead has a population of 33,341, which puts it first in the “Charming” category, while Waynesville leads the “Quaint” voting.

Galena, Illinois, is about 1,000 votes behind Waynesville in the “Quaint” division, and the next closest competitor for this category is Lititz, Pennsylvania, with just 247 votes.

Voting has been extended until March 31, and winners will be notified within a week or so.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category. Winners will appear in video with Jann & Rodney of the television show “Small Town, Big Deal” seen on RFD-TV and each winning town will be featured on the show.

Winning towns and local businesses will also receive featured listings on ShopOnMain.com.

Each individual can only vote once, but those who have voted can share the link to vote with others on their email and Facebook pages. Support Waynesville on www.bestshoppingonmain.com.

BELOIT — Beloit residents, it’s time to show your pride.

Downtown Beloit has been nominated for “The Best Shopping on Main Street Competition.”

If Beloit wins, the city’s downtown area will be featured on the nationally syndicated show, “Small Town Big Deal.” The show is hosted by Rodney Miller and Jann Carol, who travel around the country to promote local communities.

Small Town Big Deal went on-air with RFD-TV in September 2012, and has since been added to many stations across the nation. It is currently gearing up to air season two.

If Beloit won the Best Shopping on Main Street competition, businesses would also be featured on the website ShoponMain.com.

“The TV show would spotlight Beloit, all the businesses would be featured,” said Shauna El-Amin, executive director of Downtown Beloit Association.

Residents are allowed to vote online, once per email, in order to make Beloit number one. El-Amin said the city currently is in fifth place.

“We need every vote,” El-Amin said.

The folks in Waynesville, NC are serious about winning the Best Shopping On Main competition. When local reporter Vicki Hyatt found out they’d been nominated, she went all out.

The culmination of her efforts (so far) is an article in The Mountaineer that appeared both on the front page in print, and online, and makes mention of the fact that SOM Marketing Director Lisa Packer lived in Waynesville as a child.

(Note from Lisa: I moved to the other side of NC at the age of 11, and I’ve been as surprised as anyone at the success Waynesville has had early on in the contest. Waynesville takes lead in Best Shopping on Main Street contest

A former Waynesville resident with ties to the nationally broadcast RFD TV has found a way to bring her hometown into the national limelight.

Lisa Riddle Packer helped create ShopOnMain, an ecommerce platform that captures the experience of shopping on main streets across America.

“ShopOnMain uses the power of tech to support the growth of small businesses, boost local economies and provide more opportunities to shop small anywhere, any time,” the promotional literature states. “Money spent on ShopOnMain.com goes to real businesses that support their local community by providing jobs and paying local taxes.”

The site has partnered with the producers of the RFD program “Small Town Big Deal” to create a nationwide contest to find the best shopping experience in small towns and historic districts across America.

Nominations for the towns with populations of less than 100,000 began in January and now email voting is underway. The community that marshals the most votes for its shopping area will be featured on “Small Town Big Deal.”

Waynesville is now in second place in the national contest, and the number of votes increases daily as news about the contest spreads within the county and business community.

Packer grew up on the corner of Camp Branch Road and Mull Street in Waynesville, and went to kindergarten and part of first grade at Hazlewood Elementary school.

Her family moved Florida briefly before moving back to Waynesville shere she attended second through fifth grades at Central Elementary School.

“My dad was in construction and my grandfather Loyd Riddle, built dozens of houses all over the county. But in the early 80s there was no work so we moved to Fayetteville where Dad could work on the military base,” she said.  “I always felt like I left my heart in Waynesville, and I will live there again someday. My youngest will graduate high school in a couple years, so hopefully then.”

Packer said she has been involved in internet marketing for about eight years, and has found it to be a way that will help small, main street.

“We really want to use the power of the internet to help build businesses like the ones on Main Street in Waynesville — the ones that are hurt when the big box stores come to town, and when people buy things online that actually can be found locally,” Packer said.

“The day is rapidly approaching (if it’s not already here) where businesses with no online presence just won’t be able to survive. Shoppers insist on searching for reviews and checking out stores online during the buying process, and if they can get what they want without leaving home, they will. Retail stores who don’t make what they sell available online are going to lose more and more market share. Our goal is to give them the means to do it easily and competitively. And by grouping everyone together, they’ll be able to be found, as well.”

What a win means

The winner will of the Best Shopping on Main competition will receive bragging rights that can be used to promote their town.

The town and all it has to offer will be featured on “Small Town Big Deal” where hosts Jann Carl and Rodney Miller will highlight the local businesses and residents in a video that showcases what makes the winning town’s shopping experience unique.

In addition, the shops and businesses of the winning town will be preserved in its own unique section of ShopOnMain.com so that everyone in the country can discover them and enjoy shopping America’s Best Main Street.

Is Holland the small town with the best downtown shopping?

At least one person thinks so, and more are voting for Holland’s downtown in the Best Shopping on Main competition.

“I personally think it’s great that someone nominated us — I don’t know who. I certainly think downtown Holland is worthy of being nominated and of winning the title ultimately,” said Dana Kollewehr, Holland’s downtown manager.

Shop on Main started the contest as a different way to introduce a lot of people to a lot of small town shopping options. Voting for the top prize continues through March 1. The winner will be featured on a special episode of Heartland TV’s “Small Town, Big Deal,” hosted by Jann Carl and Rodney Miller.

People come from all over the country and world to visit and shop in downtown Holland, Kollewehr said.

“Now we just need to get the word out and get people to vote,” she said.

The six-month-old Shop on Main company hopes to help small town shops reach more people through its platform. The contest is just an introduction, CEO Joseph Smith said.

“If you’re not online in some form or fashion, it’s very difficult for people to find you. We’re attempting to solve that problem in a different way,” Smith said.

Every town in the contest has been nominated by someone. The winning town’s nominator will appear on the show. So far, almost 100 cities and towns across the country have been nominated. Nominations remain open, he said.

“It’s actually going much bigger than we thought it would,” Smith said. “This contest has the potential to bring a lot of attention — like national attention — to (the winning) town.”

The town of El Dorado, Arkansas, jumped out to an early lead in the Best Shopping On Main competition. And for good reason. Local media mentioned the contest not once, but twice.

Main Street Shopping District Off To Strong Start in National Competition

The city of El Dorado, or rather its award-winning Main Street shopping district, is off to a strong start in a national competition that could mean an appearance on a syndicated television show.

By Monday, local voters had helped the city build a commanding lead among communities around the nation that are in the running for the Best Shopping on Main Street competition, and Mark Givens, executive director of Main Street El Dorado, is encouraging the community to continue casting its ballots.

The contest was launched about a week ago by ShoponMain.com and “Small Town, Big Deal,” a nationally syndicated TV show that spotlights innovative, interesting and historic happenings in small-town USA, according to the show’s website.
STBD airs on RFD-TV, a network that focuses on rural communities in America.

Givens said the El Dorado-Union County Chamber of Commerce notified the MSE office about the contest to “find the best ‘Main Street’ shopping experience in America.”

After MSE representatives reviewed the information sent by the chamber, Givens said they took to social media and asked local residents to visit the Shop on Main website to nominate the local Main Street program, one of dozens across the country that has entered the contest so far.

Late Monday afternoon, 451 votes had been cast for El Dorado, more than 260 votes ahead of the communities with the next highest number of votes — Beloit, Wis., and Lansing, Mich., which were tied at 190.

“We’re doing well and hopefully, we’ll get more votes,” Givens said.

Lisa Packer, director of marketing for ShopOnMain.com, said the idea behind the contest is to help create excitement and generate buzz for the new website, which went live in October.

Additionally, Shop On Main saw the contest as an opportunity to use the Internet to market and promote small business and entrepreneurship, which Shop on Main believes are the economic backbone of the country, particularly in rural communities.
“A lot of times, we think of the Internet as taking away from small business. We wanted to use the power of the Internet to support local economies,” Packer said.

She said small businesses often must compete with big box stores and the convenience that Internet shopping can provide.
“A lot of times, you can find the same thing in your local town, but people just don’t know,” Packer continued.

The winner of the competition has a shot at being featured on an episode of STBD, which grabs about 500,000 viewers a week.
“I think that’s going to get a lot of attention, a lot of exposure on the national level,” Givens said.

“They will be interested in local business owners, they’ll do a segment on the town – what makes you great, what makes you special and unique,” Packer said.

Due to the enthusiastic response to the contest in just a matter of days, Packer said sponsors have decided to tweak some of the rules.

New categories will be created based on the size and population of the communities who enter. Winners will be selected in each category and an overall winner will be chosen.

There have also been discussions to extend the deadline for voting from March 1 to March 31, Packer said.

In a further effort to boost local economies, stores in the winning town will also get a separate, “spotlight” listing on the Shop On Main website.

“They’ll be able to take orders from all over the country,” Packer said.

WENATCHEE — Here’s the question: Does our town have the best Main Street shopping experience in America?

Here’s the answer: Well, maybe. Online voting in a national contest will tell the tale, but so far the competition hasn’t set the Internet on fire. As of Thursday, little ol’ Wenatchee had zero votes and the top vote-getter — Lansing, Michigan — had garnered only 146 votes.


UPDATE: Just over a week later, the contest has taken off, with the top 2 cities garnering nearly 2,000 votes between them. Wenatchee was just over 50.
